Features

  • Cardinal features of pulmonary TB: cough, night sweats, fever and weight loss.
  • Pleural effusion is seen more frequently
  • Lung infection mimics community acquired pneumonia
  • Chest radiograph may be normal in spite of TB
  • Sputum smear is often negative
  • Tuberculin test is often non-reactive
  • Multi-drug resistant tuberculosis is frequent
  • Infection by mycobacterium species other than M. tuberculosis is common
