Causes

  • Ancylostoma doudenale and Necator americanus

Signs and symptoms

Usually asymptomatic. Features may include:

  • Cough
  • Pallor
  • Weakness
  • Weight loss

Investigations

  • Stool microscopy for ova and parasites.
  • Stool examination for occult blood
  • Full blood count, including haemoglobin and mean corpuscular volume

Pharmacological treatment

Mebendazole oral

Adult:

100 mg every 12 hours for 3 days

First-trimester pregnancy: Not recommended

Child:

1 – 17 years: 100mg every 12 hours for 3 days

Below 12 months: Not recommended

Albendazole oral

Adult:

400 mg as a single dose

Child:

Below 2 years: 200 mg as a single dose

2 – 17 years: 400 mg as a single dose
