Description
This is a self-limiting disease caused by viruses and allergies. Common colds are highly infectious, and
symptoms maybe mild but systemic upset may occur.
Signs and Symptoms
• Running nose/nasal congestion
• Cough
• Irritation of the throat
• Fever
• Sneezing
Treatment
Supportive
• Encourage plenty oral fluids.
Pharmacological
• Analgesics: Paracetamol, 10 – 25mg/kg 4-6 hourly.
• Nasal decongestants: Saline nasal drops or spray
Antibiotics are NOT indicated in the common cold
Complications
• Lower respiratory tract infection
• Bronchitis and pneumonia
