Description

Inflammation of the brain coverings called meninges.

Signs and Symptoms

• Headache
• Malaise
• Stiff neck and rigidity
• Photophobia
• Nausea and vomiting
• Fever, chills
• Confusion, disorientation
• Convulsions
• Lethargy
• Decreased appetite
• Altered mental state
• Irritability,
• Kerning sign, Brudzinski sign
• Low GCS

Investigations

• CSF studies: -MCS: Ziehl-Nelson stain, Indian ink stain and Gram stain;
• Biochemistry-CSF protein and CSF glucose;
• Cryptococcal Antigen Test (CAT) and Toxoplasma Antigen Test (TAT).
• RBS, FBC and DC, KFTs, MPS, RDT for malaria, LFTs, blood culture, CRP, ESR, Urine LAM, HIV test, RPR
• CT/ MRI brain
• CXR
