Description
Inflammation of the brain coverings called meninges.
Signs and Symptoms
- Headache
- Malaise
- Stiff neck and rigidity
- Photophobia
- Nausea and vomiting
- Fever, chills
- Confusion, disorientation
- Convulsions
- Lethargy
- Decreased appetite
- Altered mental state
- Irritability,
- Kerning sign, Brudzinski sign
- Low GCS
Investigations
- CSF studies: -MCS: Ziehl-Nelson stain, Indian ink stain and Gram stain;
- Biochemistry-CSF protein and CSF glucose;
- Cryptococcal Antigen Test (CAT) and Toxoplasma Antigen Test (TAT).
- RBS, FBC and DC, KFTs, MPS, RDT for malaria, LFTs, blood culture, CRP, ESR, Urine LAM, HIV test, RPR
- CT/ MRI brain
- CXR
