Causes

STI Related

  • Chlamydia trichomatis
  • Treponema palladium and Herpes simplex

Non-STI Related

  • Anal fissure
  • Faecal impaction
  • Food intolerance
  • Gastroenteritis
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Ulcerative colitis

Signs and symptoms

  • Pus discharge
  • Redness of the rectum/anal canal (proctitis)
  • Itching of the rectum; burning sensation

Evaluation/Investigations

  • Palpitation of anogenital area
  • Digital anoscopy
  • HIV tests
  • Other investigations as appropriate

Pharmacological treatment

Ceftriaxone IM

250 mg in a single dose

PLUS

Doxycycline oral

100 mg twice a day for 7 days

Referral

Refer for specialist care if no improvement
