Acute Bacterial Conjunctivitis

Non-pharmacological Treatment
- Cold compress to eyes
- Good eye hygiene (regular eye wash with clean or normal saline)
- Limit exposure to contacts if infectious cause suspected
Pharmacological treatment
Adult Ciprofloxacin 0.3% eye drops Instil eye drops 4 times daily for 1 week OR Tetracycline eye ointment 1% Apply ointment two times daily Adult with severe pain or photophobia ADD Cyclopentolate eye drops Instil into the eye 3 times daily for 3 days. PLUS Paracetamol oral 1g every 6 hours as required |
Child Chloramphenicol 0.5% eye drops, Instil eye drops 4 times daily for 1 week. OR Tetracycline eye ointment 1% Apply ointment two times daily Child with severe pain or photophobia ADD Cyclopentolate eye drops Instil eye drops 3 times daily for 3 days. PLUS Paracetamol oral 10-15mg/kg/dose every 6 hours as required |
Note: Do not give any eye drops containing a corticosteroid
Referral
- Refer for specialist care if no improvement in 4 days
